Dental emergencies can happen at any time, but you definitely don’t want to deal with one when you’re trying to have fun! With Halloween a little over a week away, now is the time to learn how to avoid an urgent dental problem on this creepy holiday! So, before you head out the door to that spooky soiree or to collect all that candy, here are some tips for safeguarding your smile from a dental emergency!
Be Picky
With all the candy filling your bucket, being a little picky should be easy. Be sure to avoid candies that will do the most damage to your teeth, such as:
- Sticky or chewy like caramels, taffy, or gummies.
- Hard candies, which are not only dangerous if you crunch them, but also for keeping your teeth coated in sugar while they dissolve.
- Acidic or sour candies.
Instead, stick to chocolate, sugarless gum, and other soft (but not sticky) chews like licorice.
Fill Up First
Before you head out the door, make sure you have a healthy meal first. This way you won’t be as likely to binge on junk food, and you’ll have the energy to hit all the best neighborhoods or party ‘til dawn!
Eat Candy at Dinner
No, not for dinner, at dinner. Treat yourself to one item from your Halloween haul as a dessert after dinner. This way, you’ll clean all that candy off your teeth when you do your bedtime brushing.
Light the Way
If you’re going out trick or treating, be sure to either take only well-lit routes, or bring along a flashlight with new batteries so you can see where you’re going and don’t accidentally trip and fall in the dark and damage a tooth!
Brush Up
On Halloween, be sure to brush your teeth well before bed, and continue to brush twice a day and floss once a day both before and after the big day. Furthermore, visit your dentist twice a year for your semi-annual cleaning and exam, and your teeth will stay healthy and strong all year long!
Remember, Halloween is supposed to be fun! Don’t spend the spookiest night of the year at the emergency dentist! Take care of your teeth and you’ll be treated to excellent oral health this holiday and beyond!
